Frequently asked questions about legalization and apostille
What exactly is the Hague Apostille?
A certificate that authenticates the origin of a public document so it is accepted in another country that is party to the convention. Brazil and the United States are both parties, which removes the need for consular legalization.
Can I have the document translated by anyone?
Not for official use in Brazil. Only a sworn translation is accepted by registries, courts and public bodies.
Is the apostille done in Brazil or in the United States?
In the country that issued the document. An American paper is apostilled in the issuing state; a Brazilian one is apostilled in Brazil.
Does a digital document work?
It depends on the receiving body. Some accept the digital version with a verification code, others require the physical original. We check this before starting.
How long is an apostille valid?
The apostille itself does not expire. What may expire is the underlying document, such as a certificate with a limited period of validity.
